What to do if you suspect a break-in.

Returning home to find a door or window ajar can be unsettling. The first step is to call the police immediately—don’t go inside.

If you’re ever faced with an intruder unexpectedly, your safety comes first. If you can, leave the area. If you’re unable to, stay calm and let the intruder exit. Never try to stop them, as they may be dangerous.

After the police have arrived, avoid touching anything or tidying up—doing so could interfere with important evidence. Handing over a copy of your home inventory will also help the police identify your belongings if they’re recovered.
